Can I use an old song in a movie without permission as long as I credit the group at the end?

No, you cannot use ANY copyrighted materials without permission. It is very illegal, and many people do it without getting caught, but should they, they would be in big trouble. Best to play it safe, in my opinion.
There should be no problem whatsoever if the film is non profit. However if the film is to be screened or produced for profit rites would need to be paid to the copyright owner.
I know if you add music to a video and stick it on youtube, they'll remove all of the sound if it's from a musician from certain record companies. I can't get anything to upload anymore on there due to copyright laws.

Yes, of course. The only real time it would probably matter is if you're making a feature length film, the sorts that would be in cinemas.

if you are going to be showing this off in a public event, you cant.
If it is Royalty Free, you still have to pay for the rights to play the song
If its for like, a class project, then you should be ok.
If your even using it for a local show off for a company, it is still illegal. I have seen the past experiences with this gone wrong.

If you are planing to sell this movie then you need permission.

I think you have to have permission based on what i have heard but of course you can use it just risk getting sued! lol
