I have received a letter from an attorney demanding payment for a Providian credit card. What should be my next step before they file a complaint in court?

They work for a collection agency but they are real lawyers.

Should a person with what would commonly considered bad credit even bother taking the LSAT?
I paid my attorney a retainer of $3,000 dollars and only $500 or so was deducted from it before I called off my divorce. I paid him with a credit card and he said he will "refund the money ASAP." I'm not sure if I should be expecting a check or if he will just credit my credit card. Anyone have any experience with this?
